James Gallagher is an American filmmaker and photographer whose work runs from the Tribeca-premiered documentary SONGS ABOUT FUCKING to editorial photography for The New York Times and The New Yorker.

As a photographer, Gallagher has had his images, journalistic and editorial, in VICE, Vogue, The Times of London, Little, Brown, The New Yorker, and The New York Times covering important events like the United States Presidential Election and the Timothée Chalamet look alike contest with people like SZA, Zendaya, and his sister’s dog Willie Nelson.

As a director, he’s made advertisements, music videos, plays, documentaries, narratives, short films, and a feature. New Partner written by Josh Margolin and Quinn Beswick which was a Vimeo Staff Pick and won Best Comedy at the New York Television Festival, Chloe and Zoe for Fullscreen, and My Boyfriend is a Robot for Freeform. He's also directed branded pieces for VICE, Vox, Ray-Ban, Volvo, Los Angeles Apparel, FCUK, and many more.

As writer/director, LOVE, a father and son story set in the world of competitive juniors tennis, (Will Hochman, Boris McGiver, Susan Sarandon) which premiered as a Vimeo Staff Pick, Short of the Week, and was covered by Guy Lodge for The Guardian who called it “a moving essay on toxic masculinity.” PAULETTE, a documentary about a ballet teacher and former Radio City Music Hall Corps De Ballet soloist in the final year of her life which premiered in competition at the Big Sky Documentary Festival, on Vimeo as a Staff Pick, and at Short of the Week. 

His documentary feature SONGS ABOUT FUCKING which follows Marc Rebillet on his Third Dose Tour premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and is set for a theatrical release in late 2026.
